Premium Seal / Turbo Phalt
Date: May 22, 1998
Well Name / Area: OCSG 12008 #A-7 / Ship Shoal Block #349
Rig: Ensco #21
Total Depth: TVD 16,492'
Problem Interval: 16,099' - 16,153'
Mud Type / Weight: Ligno / 16.7 ppg
Hole Size: 8 1/2"
Problem Encountered: While drilling @ 16,099 (sub-salt/rubble), began losing mud and hole packing off.
Product Application: Built a 100 bbl pill containing 12.5 ppb Premium Seal Fine and 2.5 ppb Turbo Phalt. Displace pill on bottom. POOH and lay down MWD. Reamed to 16,100. Tight spot at 16,040. Started losing mud. Spot 100 bbl pill containing 37 ppb Premium Seal Fine, Turbo Phalt, and Walnut Hulls. Pull into casing allowing hole to heal 8 hours.
Results: After 8 hours, no losses observed. Trip into hole and circulate with full returns. Resumed drilling pumping 20 bbl sweeps containing 20 ppb Premium Seal and Turbo Phalt every hour.
Remarks: The well drilled and logged to TD without further losses or stuck pipe. Premium Seal and Turbo Phalt proved to be very effective in curing mud losses and averting stuck pipe.
Premium Seal / Turbo Phalt
Date: February 24, 1999
Well Name / Area: OCSG 19931 #1 / Mississippi Canyon 243
Total Depth: 5,300'
Problem Interval: 3,160' - 5,000'
Water Depth: 2,850'
Mud Type / Weight: Saltwater / 8.6
Hole Size: 26"
Problem Encountered: While drilling the 26 hole for 20 casing run, water flow was observed. Spotting 10.0 ppg kill mud failed to stop the flow and kill mud weight was raised to 11.5 ppg.
Product Application: While drilling this interval, sweeps containing 20 ppb Premium Seal Coarse, 10 ppb Premium Seal Fine, and 10 ppb Turbo Phalt were pumped every other stand to seal unconsolidated sands.
Results: Sufficient hydrostatic was obtained to stop water flow while borehole integrity established through Premium Seal and Turbo Phalt sweeps prevented loss of kill mud to unconsolidated formation.
Remarks: Premium Seal and Turbo Phalt was successful in preventing loss of 11.5 ppg kill mud to the formation by allowing sufficient hydrostatic to stop water flow.
Premium Seal / Turbo Phalt
Date: April 3, 2000 April 6, 2000
Well Name / Area: OCSG 17913 #A-2 / Vermilion 269
Total Depth: 12,268'
Problem Interval: 11,735 12,268
Mud Type / Weight: Lignosulfonate / 11.1 ppg
Hole Size: 12 1/4"
Problem Encountered: Drill through a 300 depleted sand section with anticipated differential pressure of 5100 psi.
Product Application: Added 5 ppb Premium Seal Fine and 5 ppb Turbo Phalt to the active system prior to drilling the K-1 depleted sand. Once the K-1 sand was penetrated, sweeps of 15 bbls containing 15 ppb Premium Seal Fine, 5 ppb Premium Seal Coarse, and 10 ppb Turbo Phalt was pumped every 30 of new hole drilled.
Results: After drilling 35 into the K-1 depleted sand, the top drive blew a fuse and was unable to rotate. The drill pipe instantly became stuck. The pipe came free after the fuse was changed and the top drive was able to rotate. The formation was ratty and sticky. As sweeps were continued every 30, the hole became progressively less sticky. No mud losses occurred during drilling and casing was run and cemented without problems.
Remarks: With the application of Premium Seal and Turbo Phalt throughout the system and in conjunction with concentrated sweeps, the operator was able to drill through the depleted sand and run casing without incident. Although stuck pipe occurred due to an electrical failure, the fact that the pipe pulled free indicates the effectiveness of Premium Seal and Turbo Phalt as a formation sealant.
